Press Release

It is with great sadness that we must announce that the 2012 Sawtooth Music Festival was, unfortunately, our last. There will not be a 2013 Sawtooth Music Festival. The mayor and city council of Stanley have made it impossible for us to continue. The city has imposed new financial burdens on us while simultaneously limiting our capacity to 2000 people, (we had 2700 in 2012). This combination is ultimately and financially crippling. City managers fail to recognize the economic benefit the festival provides to the community and refuse to partner with us or otherwise invest in the long term success of the event. We have been crunching numbers for months trying to figure out a way to continue but are unable to do so under these newly imposed conditions. This is a heartbreaking development for us as we have poured 8 years of our lives into this event and wanted nothing more than to be sitting in the audience with you when we were old and gray.

It has been incredibly rewarding to organize this event and to watch it grow over the years. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into when this all started and we feel incredibly lucky and grateful to have been a part of something so organic. Thank you for being patient with us as we grew. Thank you for waiting out the craziest lightning storm in the history of the area and for coming back year after year with your friends and family in tow. You are the world’s greatest fans. It takes a village to raise a festival and this could not have happened without our incredible volunteers and crew… people who were such regulars they knew better what to do than we did. Our 85 person crew came back year after year, taking time from their jobs and families to work ridiculously hard for nothing but the joy and fun of being part of this event. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Every year we were humbled by your hard-work and generosity. We are equally proud of what has been accomplished as we are saddened that it will not continue.

We hope you will still visit the area as we know first hand the profound effect that Stanley and the Sawtooth Mountain Range can have on a person. The Stanley Baking Company and Sawtooth Hotel have been particularly supportive throughout the years and they deserve continued patronage from SMF fans. Also, do yourselves a favor and spend as much time as possible on the Salmon River. Our good friends at White Cloud Rafting are the perfect combination of debaucherous, sarcastic, and professional. It is worth putting your life into their hands for an afternoon. Go hang out, you will not regret it.

We are happy to answer any questions you might have. You can also make your voices heard by emailing the Stanley Mayor & City Council. We ask that you remain positive, respectful, and constructive in any correspondence. Thank you once again for having supported the Sawtooth Music Festival. Seeing the joy in your faces and the spring in your dance steps is the reason we did this for as long as we did. We miss you already…
